Footprints of time

Footprints in Time follow me like a hushed whisper.
Speaking to my heart are the echos of the Past,
cupping my ear and touching the Present.

The unseen voices come in different flavors:
scolding, encouraging, cautioning, advising.

Some of these voices are extremely useful.
Others seek to undermine what I can achieve.

The Past is alive within me.
But is it Oracle or Jester?
I must decide.

Love:

Self Knowledge:
And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.

"I have found a truth."
Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather,
"I have met the soul walking upon my path."
For the soul walks upon all paths.

Joy and Sorrow:
Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow,"
and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

Good and Evil:
For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst?
Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts, it drinks even of dead waters.

A Dialogue Between the Resolved Soul, And Created Pleasure

Soul
My gentler Rest is on a Thought,
Conscious of doing what I ought.

Pleasure
If thou bee'st with Perfumes pleas'd,
Such as oft the Gods appeas'd,
Thou in fragrant Clouds shalt show
Like another God below.

Soul
A Soul that knowes not to presume
Is Heaven's and its own perfume.

Pleasure
Every thing does seem to vie
Which should first attract thine Eye:
But since none deserves that grace,
In this Crystal view thy face.

Soul
When the Creator's skill is priz'd,
The rest is all but Earth disguis'd.

Pleasure
All this fair, and cost, and sweet,

Soul
If things of Sight such Heavens be,
What Heavens are those we cannot see?

Pleasure

What Friends, if to my self untrue?
What Slaves, unless I captive you?
